BARROW’S MP has spoken out on the issue of pet thefts and blackmail following an update in a case where 13 people from the area have been arrested.
A further six people have been arrested in connection with an ongoing operation into the exploitation of missing animals.
The arrests follow an investigation, across 15 police forces, following reports that people with missing animals had been targeted and blackmailed via social media for money.
Simon Fell, MP for Barrow, said: “Pet theft is an awful crime - pets are companions and friends and so this crime is very keenly felt by those who experience it.
“It is great that the police are making good progress with their investigation, but I would urge anyone with information to come forward if they know anything, or if they have concerns.
“The Government set up a pet theft taskforce recently which is examining every option available to protect families from this heartbreaking crime.
“We will shortly be legislating through the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Court Bill to ensure that those responsible feel the full force of the law.”
The Pet Theft Taskforce was launched to investigate the reported rise in pet theft since the start of lockdown as sales platforms have reported a considerable rise in puppy and kitten prices over the course of the past year. This was because of more people deciding to buy or adopt a pet.
Victims of the blackmail have included persons across UK and in Cumbria. There are currently 21 reported victims.
Cumbria Constabulary said: “A further six people have been arrested and interviewed in connection with this investigation. All but one from Barrow, other from Millom.
"Five men aged 20, 20, 23, 25, 42
"One woman aged 28
“All were arrested on suspicion of blackmail and money laundering.
“Status of all those arrested is that they are currently released under investigation.”
This makes 13 arrests in total after seven people from Barrow were arrested back in May.
