POLICE found cannabis when they searched a woman’s home, a court heard.

Keira Andrea Draper was found with the class B drug when officers searched through her home in Ulverston.

The defendant pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis when she appeared in the dock at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecutor Lee Dacre told the court that it happened on February 13.

He said: “At 12.22pm police conducted a search on an address.

“While searching the address they found cannabis in the bedroom.

“She accepted that it was hers.”

Mr Dacre told the court that Draper had a record of 39 previous offences.

Draper, who represented herself in court, said she smoked cannabis ‘every night’ for medicinal purposes and that her doctor was aware.

“I’m aware it’s illegal,” she said.

“It was less than a gram.”

District judge John Temperley sentenced Draper, of Bailey Street, to a fine of £80 for the offence having given her credit for her guilty plea.

He also told her to pay a £34 surcharge to fund victim services as well as £85 in prosecution costs for bringing the case to court.

Judge Temperley also ordered that the drugs that were found by police be forfeited and destroyed.

Draper was handed a 12-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months last year.

She was convicted after police found a knife in her car as well as cannabis and amphetamines.

Draper originally denied the knife offence, saying she was going to use it to carry out sculpting work.
