Police have warned the public to be vigilant after receiving reports of ‘fake’ notes in Windermere.
South Lakes Police said there had been several reports of the fake notes being passed around in the town in recent days and that enquiries are ‘ongoing’.
A force spokesman said: “This is a crime and can carry severe penalties.
“Enquiries are ongoing.
“Vigilance is advised.
“Any reports to 101.
“If in any doubt over legitimacy - refuse the sale.”
