AN INQUEST is due to be held into the death of a man who died in hospital following a crash on the A590.
Sydney Atkinson, 92, from Ulverston, died at Aintree Hospital in Liverpool after sustaining serious injuries in the crash on County Road on October 29, 2018.
The inquest is due to take place today at Cockermouth Coroner’s Court at 2pm.
The hearing is estimated to take around three hours to come to a conclusion and it will be overseen by coroner Mr Craig Smith.
Following the death of the World War Two veteran, David Webster, who was Ulverston mayor, said at the time: “My message is for people to take care with the change of the clocks.
“Nights are going dark at earlier times now, and during rush hour. It is darker for drivers and pedestrians to see one another. Pedestrians need to take more care when crossing the roads, and they need to use zebra crossings.”
The question over the safety of the A590 has remained with a fatality occurring a year later when a 22-year-old died in a collision on the same road.
Another tribute at the time was given by Tom Pickthall, chairman of the Royal British Legion in Ulverston, who said the flag will be lowered at half mast as a sign of respect.
“I’m very sad to hear the news,” he said. “I’ve know Syd for quite a number of years, we worked together at Glaxo because he was there when I first started working there in 1965.
“I know that Syd’s health had deteriorated over the last few years and that his eyesight was going a bit.
“I’m aware that he had medals presented to him by Russia after the war but I’m not sure of the details behind why he received them. It’s a sad loss as he was quite a character.”
