WOULD you ever expect to hear a knock at the door and answer it to find the two-time world heavy weight champion of the world asking for a pint glass?
Tyson Fury, the Gypsy King and WBC Heavyweight Champion, dropped by Carnforth’s Canal Turn pub much to the surprise of landlord Bill Johnston.
Bill, previously the managing director for The Bay radio station, had been self-isolating in the pub flat since his wife Victoria left early retirement from the NHS to return to front line work.
Bill said: “I was on my laptop and heard a knock at the door and was stunned to see the world champion outside!
“I recognised him straight away and asked how I could help.
“He appeared to be on a jog from his home in neighbouring Hest Bank.
“He explained that he needed a pint glass with a 'widget' in it as his had smashed on the floor at home. I was only too happy to oblige."
The two men abided by social distancing during their encounter and the 6ft 9in fighter did not enter the premises.
He did say he would be interested in revisiting the Canal Turn once the lockdown is lifted and the pub reopens.
Bill said: “Even the WHC needs the right pint glass during lockdown."
Tyson offered to pay for the glass but Bill decided a socially distanced selfie would do.
Bill posted the photo taken with himself and Fury on social media and received over 500 likes and had a reach of nearly 10,000.
The Canal Turn, located on Lancaster Road, Carnforth, has been lighting up blue every evening in support of NHS heroes until the current lockdown is lifted.
The business posted on social media: "Like all of us in LA5, The Canal Turn is in awe of the amazing work our frontline staff and key workers do every day to keep us all going. We’ve decided to light up the pub blue every evening, from 8pm till 4am, until the crisis is over, and we are all back together."
Fury most recently defeated former WBC Champion Deontay Wilder in February this year, handing Wilder his first loss.
