The countdown to Christmas is once again well and truly underway, with constant reminders of the festive period seemingly around every corner. For many it is a joyous time of year, but for others it can be a time of trepidation; least not for the significant financial strain it can bring.
Christmas seems to be the easiest time of the year to spend money we don’t always have, whether this is driven by expectation, guilt, pressure or historical present giving. These feelings may resonate with many of us, but as we get older and our circumstances change turning into a bit of a Scrooge is no bad thing!
It is really important to be mindful of the longer term consequences of excessive spending; is it really worth months or even years’ worth of debt? It is still possible to treat family and friends to gifts by setting a budget which is realistic or, following what seems to be a growing trend of agreeing in advance with loved ones to donate a small amount to a local to charity or even make them a lovely meal instead of buying a Christmas gift. Very often just making the effort to visit someone for a cup of tea and mince pie can mean far more than any present.
Let’s keep that in the forefront of our minds, look after others, but also, don’t forget to look after ourselves. Please call us on 030 300 30003 if you do find yourself in financial difficulty in order to discuss the support available.
