Two recent sittings of the House of Commons Committee on the Haweswater Bill have been devoted to the settlement of the principle on which the Manchester Corporation shall be required to supply outside authorities with water from this source without a profit to themselves.
50 Years Ago - 1969
Britain's first National Park centre at Brockhole, a 32-acre estate on the east shore of Windermere, was opened to the public yesterday. The estate, which has cost £121,000 to purchase and adapt, is owned and run by the Lake District Planning Board with help from the Countryside Commission.
25 Years Ago - 1994
Bomb disposal experts have taken away an unexploded First World War bomb from an outhouse at Bolton-le-Sands. The shell, believed to be around 70 years old, had been fired but failed to explode. It was found with other wartime bits and pieces by a joiner as he cleared a building in St Michael's Lane.
