A KENDAL man has raised almost £13000 for charity by walking coast to coast - and back again.
Jack Ellerby, 50, set out on the mammoth 400-mile expedition from St. Bees Head in early May. The route, which saw him walk to Robin Hood's Bay (and back) via the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, and North York Moors national parks, took him more than three weeks to complete.
He was raising money for two different causes: The Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association and The Brain Tumour Charity.
The former was decided upon after one of Mr Ellerby's close friends, Debbie Greenwood, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, which affects the messages the nerves in the brain and spinal cord send to the muscles.
He chose The Brain Tumour Charity as two of his good friends - Darren Garbutt, and later Mr Garbutt's mother, Pat - died after developing brain tumours.
As it stands Mr Ellerby has raised almost £13,000 (including gift aid) to split between the charities. The money for MND will be divided equally between research and the North Lancashire/ South Cumbria branch of the association.
Mr Ellerby passed on his thanks to all those who have contributed. There is still time to donate, and this can be done by visiting https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/JackEllerby.
