A FEAT which may well never have been achieved in the long and glorious history of cricket took place in a Westmorland League match this week.
Amazingly, every wicket taken by Bare second XI in their victory over Burneside 2nd XI was taken by the deadly father and daughter combination of Simon and Lauren Burgess.
Dad Simon led the way with a splendid five wicket haul, but daughter Lauren was not far behind as she took the other four wickets to fall as their team completed a 30 run win.
And the family nature of the victory was well and truly complete because top scorer for Bare in the Division Four clash was Lauren’s fiance Liam Burrows.
His 46 was vital in giving Bare’s second team something to bowl at as they struggled to 98 all out.
And then he handed over to his future wife and soon-to-be father-in-law, whose joint effort completed the job, dad taking five for 32 and daughter finishing with four for 33.
Fittingly, it was Lauren completing the victory in fine style as she took the final wicket with a very neat caught and bowled.
Burneside were a man short, so that joint nine wicket haul was enough to clinch victory and complete an achievement which will in all likelihood go down in the record books as cricket chiefs believe a father and daughter combination have never before taken every wicket in an innings.
“It’s a fantastic feat and it’s a wonderful cricketing story,” said Westmorland League secretary Tim Mansfield.
Simon, 48, an engineer who works for the Gilkes company in Kendal, played cricket at school but then gave up the game for many years, only returning to playing competitively in recent seasons to spend more time with his daughter.
However, Lauren, who is 21, lives and breathes cricket, as she is not only a Westmorland League regular but is also the women’s and girls development coach for the Lancashire Cricket Foundation.
Mr Mansfield said Lauren’s ability was well known around the league and added that it was not the first time she had put in a match winning performance for her team.
She made her cricketing debut for the Cumberland women’s team in 2017 against Northumberland women.
