Singles Collection (26 x 7 inch discs) box set by The Beach Boys, Capitol records, 1979, value at £60
I RECENTLY read a biography of the late Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Inc, writes MICHAEL BROOKS. Reputed to be one of the richest men in the world, he introduced technology that gave us almost everything at the touch of a button. The billionaire was asked, with all his wealth, what made him really happy? He owned a huge collection of vinyl albums and he often said, at the end of the day, one of his simple joys was removing the record from the sleeve, putting it on the turntable and relax listening to the music.
As vinyl releases continue to grow, record labels are introducing more reissues of artists greatest music in box collections. What makes this one so unique is despite stating 1963-1970, it is in fact every single release from 1961-1970, including the B sides by The Beach Boys. It consists of 25 x 7 inch discs. Each one has its own particular picture sleeve. Plus, the box set also includes an exclusive special collectors edition of Pamela Jean/After The Game credited to The Survivors recorded in 1964 and never released in the UK. It is acknowledged as an unreleased Beach Boys disc making this collection highly sought after.
Most of the early songs written by Brian Wilson relate to long summer days, girls on the beach, surfing, hot rod cars all filled by a sun-kissed innocence of undying love and devotion. By the mid sixties, Brian's songwriting style had developed into a deeper level of maturity, songs like Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Here Today take us through a journey through hope, confusion even resigned despair. Later sixties recordings after Good Vibrations relate to the summer days we leave behind, but also to the ultimate hope of seeking and finding everlasting love.
Sometimes we have to let the facts speak for themselves. They are universally recognised as one of the most popular vocal groups in the world, possibly even rivalling The Beatles. They have had more than 80 songs chart worldwide: 29 in the UK, and over 50 albums releases with record sales exceeding more than 100 million, making them one of the best selling bands of all time. This superb box collection can only be described as a joyous celebration of an endless summer.
