The A592 Kirkstone Pass is closed both ways due to snow and several road traffic incidents on the road from the A5091 Park Brow (Dockray) to the A591 Ambleside Road (Windermere).

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out yesterday to help 33 people after 'multiple collisions' happened on Kirkstone Pass.

A spokesman from the team said: “A woman in her fifties was assessed on scene for suspected fractured ribs and an arm injury before being evacuated with her husband back to the Team’s Rescue Centre for transfer to a NWAS ambulance and transfer to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

"Eight uninjured occupants of four other vehicles were also evacuated back to the Rescue Centre.

"Six were eventually returned to their vehicles once the weather improved, two others were taken to Penrith railway station as their car was un-drivable."

Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team also assisted with the rescue. A spokesperson said they helped to evacuate 23 elderly people from a coach stranded by the road closure.

Other accidents happened yesterday on the southbound side of the M6 between Junction 39 at Shap and Killington with most of the vehicles involved recovered to the hard shoulder.

Wrynose, Newlands, Honister, Hardknott and Whinlatter passes are all closed due to snow, as is Corney Fell Road.
