STUDENTS at Appleby Grammar School are being asked for their ideas, as head teacher Andrew Lund re-launches the Student Forum.
The representatives of each form in the grammar school have come together for their first meeting, setting up working sub groups to look at fund-raising, food in school and recycling.
The new Forum are also being asked for comments on the new School Development Plan, which has gone out to consultation with staff and governors.
Mr Lund, who took over the headship from Terry Hobson in September, said: "The aim of the Forum is to give students a voice, and have their ideas listened to.
"Each form votes for two representatives who attend the regular meetings, chaired by the Head Girl and Head Boy. The Forum also invites me to attend.
"From its first meeting a number of issues have been raised, including how we can improve the recycling of food packaging during lunch and break periods.
"The students are also very keen to set up their own newspaper and student pages on the school website."
Mr Lund has had support from parents on a drive to "smarten up" on school uniform.
He said: "I have had many messages of support from parents and the community on this issue. The students too are making the effort but it is important we continue to focus on a smart appearance."
Appleby Grammar School has had the largest intake, with 117 students joining the school in Year 7 this September. The Year 7 took part in a residential get-to-know each other at Grinsdale Lodge in North Yorkshire.
Mr Lund said: "The three day residential is usually held at Ennerdale but, due to the large number of students this year, we relocated to Grinsdale. I was fortunate enough to join them for a day, which included mountain bike riding, walking and serving lunch. The feedback from staff and students has been very positive. It is a great way for students and staff to get to know each other, and has proved very successful.
The school's GCSE results were also the highest in the school's history and AS and A level results were also very high.
Mr Lund said: "The examination results have been excellent, and as well as aiming for academic achievement, we are also keen to develop in other directions. The school has a great reputation for playing an active part in the local community and for the charity work which students are involved in. The annual Sponsor Day will be held on Friday, October 19, where every student takes part in a sponsored event - walk, run silcence or PE activity. Each year group chooses a charity to fund-raise for.
"As well as this work, the students are also continuing to support Save the Children which the school has been involved in for more than 35 years.
"I am very proud to say I am head teacher of Appleby Grammar School."
