EDF Energy is searching for 37 apprentices to join the company in 2018 and Heysham power stations are running an open day for those interested in applying for its 12 places.

The stations, which take on around 12 apprentices a year, are running two ‘open days’ at the Heysham Power Stations’ Visitor Centre on Saturdays, December 9 and January 6 starting at 10am.

And the sites’ apprentice co-ordinator Kevin Demain is also visiting schools and colleges to talk to pupils about the programme.

“The open days are an opportunity for those who might not get to see one of the presentations we give to the schools and colleges locally to find out about the apprenticeship scheme.

“We are getting out to more schools and colleges than ever and talking to pupils, but the open days will give parents a chance to also find out about the programme."

The latest group of engineering apprentices were appointed during the summer and kicked off their new careers with EDF Energy with a team building week in the Lake District.

After the final apprentices were chosen the apprentices and their families were taken to see HMS Sultan – the Portsmouth-based training facility where the apprentices will spend their first two years.

Away from the classroom the apprentices will enjoy excellent sports and leisure facilities under the watchful eye of the centre’s own team.

EDF Energy’s apprentices also undertake an extensive life skills package along with some cultural visits to European cities.

After two years, the apprentices return to their home sites to complete their apprenticeship on site.
