YOUNG scientists at Settle C of E Primary School are celebrating after reaching the finals of a national schools competition.
Headteacher Richard Wright and project leader Sarah Entwistle travelled to London to meet representatives of Rolls Royce for the company's 'Science Prize', a two-year 'rolling' competition. They joined business leaders and representatives from other schools in a meeting at the capital's Science Museum.
Settle Primary has reached the last six schools in the contest, which aims to celebrate the teaching of the 'STEM' subjects - science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Mr Wright said: "The school's project is titled ‘Foundation and Robot’ and is aimed at improving our children’s foundation knowledge and skills in the four STEM subject areas, with a particular focus on science and engineering.
"Over this school year pupils from all classes will be involved in our project in some way. Simple robots will be making their way into many classrooms to introduce the children to ways that emerging technology can be useful and controlled.
Around 2,000 schools entered the competition. Settle C of E Primary School has received £6,000 in prize money and a video camera to capture the development of their project.
