Disruption continues on local roads and railway lines following floods caused by yesterday's torrential downpours.

The M6 was shut southbound between J36 and J35 overnight due to flooding from the Lancaster Canal and one lane is still not open. There is queuing traffic in this area, where a serious road accident has also happened today.

A replacement bus service is running on Northern between Windermere and Oxenholme Lake District due to displacement of crews and units caused by the flooding.

The A590 at Levens has now reopened after being hit by flooding.

Roads still closed include: the A6070 at Crooklands; the A684 Singleton Park Road at Kendal; the B6542 northbound at Appleby due to flooding at the A66 (this is a one-way street); and the B6259 at Warcop both ways  due to flooding around Swillings Lane, affecting traffic between Warcop and Kirkby Stephen.

The A5087 Coast Road at Aldingham is just passable and there is slow traffic due to flooding both ways near Riddings Lane.

The A595 at Soutergate is just passable due to flooding on the A595 both ways between Burlington Close and Tippin's Lane.

The A6 Scotland Road at Carnforth is blocked both ways and there is slow traffic due to flooding between Carnforth Truck Haven and Hawk Street. Flooding has blocked the road between the bridge over the railway line and the Esso garage.

Many roads have suffered flooding and some are only passable with care. These include the A65 at Nook.

Schools closed this morning include the Lakes School at Troutbeck Bridge; Beetham CofE Primary School and Old Hutton CoE School.

Flooding has been reported in the Wennington area meaning services are suspended between Skipton and Lancaster in both directions.

Network Rail say there has been an inspection of the railway line between Carlisle and Maryport and sites are still flooded with water above railhead height. Six coaches are now in circulation between Carlisle and Workington in both directions to connect out of trains between Barrow and Workington and to depart Carlisle at the booked departure times.

Carnforth Railway Station was partially flooded this morning.

The main street through Burton-in-Kendal was flooded this morning and barely passable, according to county councillor Roger Bingham.

Firefighters rescued a woman from the roof of a car stuck in floods on Windermere Road in Grange last night.

A local resident said around 6pm ysterday: "The fire brigade are pumping out a local cafe opposite the duck pond which has also flooded. Because it hasn't stopped raining the locals here are worried about the next high tide which is at 1.30am tomorrow morning. This is also the highest flood that most local residents can remember."

Firemen were pumping away water late last night as floods threatened the new Strawberry Fields housing exate off Oxenholme Road at Kendal. There are reports that five or six homes might have been flooded.

The Environment Agency warned residents on the Sands and surrounding areas in Appleby to expect the River Eden to burst its banks at 10pm. Residents were said to have been deploying flood gates and other defences to ward off the water.

There are currently three flood warnings (where flooding is expected  and immediate action required) in place in Cumbria: Keswick Campsite; the River Eden at Carlisle, Rickerby Park, Swifts and Stoneyholme Golf Courses; and the River Eden at Low Crosby, Eden Golf Course area.

There are still nine flood alerts (where flooding is possible and people should be prepared) in place, including the rivers Kent, Bela, Brathay, Rothey and Winster.

Flooding on the A591 near Kendal.

Yesterday there was flooding on Bridge Street at Burneside in both directions near New Road and New Street.

Torrential rain caused chaos on the A65 last night and in the early hours of this morning leaving some motorists stranded.

A number of vehicles had to be recovered and motorists were asked not to drive through flood water to avoid becoming trapped.

The road was closed north and south of Ingleton and between Settle and Long Preston and causing some traffic disruption.

A number of minor roads were also blocked and several villages in north Craven were difficult to access.
