Upper Eden rallycross racer David Ewin has had a busy couple of weeks as the 2017 season draws to a close.
With two meetings on consecutive weekends, the Warcop-based driver decided to take the team's Ford Fiesta to compete in the penultimate round of The Autosport International BTRDA Clubman Championship.
As the car is still being developed it was decided to enter both classes that the car was eligible to run in. This meant a full and hectic day competing six sets of qualifying heats. At the end of the timed runs David had put the CompareCover.com / Grand Prix Services backed car on pole position of the Historic Category C final, and on the back row of the Super modified category B final.
Taking the win in the Historic C final meant David moved up to the B final, where he managed to work his way through the field to claim 4th place, a feat he also managed to repeat in the Super modified category.
When the final results had been worked out David had finished 8th overall and 4th in class in the historic section, also an impressive 8th overall super modified and 1st in the 2 litre class.
The following weekend saw the final round of The Toyo Tyres MSA British Rallycross Championship. The competition was stiffer but David felt confident as it was at Croft – his home (nd favourite circuit, and he was in the more powerful Mitsubishi powered rear wheel drive Fiesta.
After a trouble-free run through the qualifying heats David had put the car on the second row in the first semi-final. With only the top four going through to the final a good start was needed. As the lights went green David got a clean getaway and a tidy run through the first two corners meant he was up to the all-important fourth place as the cars turned onto the first loose section.
Unfortunately, that was where disaster struck as the differential let go and the car lost all power to the drive wheels ending the day early.
On a positive note, David had done enough to finish in the top ten in the prestigious 2017 MSA British Supernational Rallycross Championship.
This Sunday (05/11/17) David and the CompareCover.com rallycross team will be back at Croft for the final round of the Clubmans Championship.
