THE Labour candidate standing for the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency launched his campaign yesterday with the help of Lancaster and Fleetwood MP Cat Smith.

Eli Aldridge, who at just 18 is one of the election's youngest candidates, got his campaign underway at the Castle Street Centre in Kendal.

Cat, who was appointed Shadow Minister for Voter Engagement and Youth Affairs by Jeremy Corbyn in 2016, said: “I am thrilled to be launching Eli’s campaign.  It is so important that young people are engaged in politics. 

"The Labour Party now has more young members than the entire UKIP membership!  Eli is a tremendous candidate, showing that the Labour Party is on the up.”

Speaking to a packed room of supporters, Eli stressed the importance of education.

“The Conservative Party has shown a disregard for education," he said.

"Many local schools have seen massive cuts to their budget. Stramongate Primary School will receive £471 less per pupil which could result in the loss of five teachers. 

"Labour recognises the importance of a properly funded education system.  A Labour Government will deliver a National Education Service which will provide people with access to education throughout their lives.”

Eli was born at Westmorland General Hospital on Christmas Day and is currently studying towards his A-Levels at Queen Katherine School in Kendal.

The Lord Clark of Windermere, who chaired the meeting, added: “I have known Eli for many years.  He is a passionate, principled man who has all the attributes to be a success in politics.”
