LIB Dem leader Tim Farron has clarified his views on gay sex following intense media pressure, saying he does not believe it is a sin.
The South Lakes MP (pictured below) said political leaders should not “pontificate on theological matters” and said he had not wanted to “get into a series of questions unpicking the theology of the Bible”.
In an interview with the BBC, Mr Farron, a Christian, said the subject had become “an issue” while he wanted the focus to be on the general election. He had been asked repeatedly to clarify his position, but had not answered directly. Mr Farron said he did not want people getting the “wrong impression” about his views, adding: “I don’t believe gay sex is a sin. I take the view though that as a political leader, my job is not to pontificate on theological matters.”
Mr Farron added that Lib Dems had “undoubtedly the best record” on gay rights out of all political parties.
