PLANS for a sheltered housing development for elderly people in Windermere have been turned down on appeal.

A government-appointed planning inspector, Jean Russell, dismissed the appeal by Golden Living, citing a lack of identified housing need, and concerns that the proposed development would harm the character and appearance of the area, and living conditions of nearby residents.

The application for redevelopment of the land at Meadfoot and Engadine, at New Road, into a site with 44 sheltered housing units for the elderly (21 one-bedroom and 23 two-bedroom apartments), one warden's flat, a communal residents' lounge and a laundry room had been refused by the Lake District National Park Authority.

After a three-day public inquiry that followed the appeal, the planning inspector concluded that the sheltered housing would meet a demand, rather than a need, and so it did not comply with planning policy.
