STUDENTS at a Kendal sixth form were joined by Tim Farron MP in a charity bike ride to raise money for Syrian refugees.

Queen Katherine School's Amnesty International group planned the 110-mile ride to represent the distance between Hungary and Austria - a route which refugees often have to walk.

Participants used exercise bikes to complete the challenge over a two day period.

Lotte Young Andrade, who helped organise the event, said: "We were trying to show the difficulty of the journey.

"I read online that the refugees had walked that journey. I chose it because refugees in Hungary have been doing quite badly.

"We wanted to raise awareness about how refugees are doing within Europe."

The whole of the sixth form took part in the event and have so far raised over £200.

Mr Farron, who cycled five kilometres at the event, said: “This event is a real credit to the thoughtfulness and compassion of the students who organised it.

"They will not only have helped to raise funds for a worthy cause, they will also have helped to highlight this crisis and raise awareness about it amongst other students.”

Any money raised from the event will be donated to World Food Programme, which provides food and supplies directly to refugees struggling to flee Syria.
