YOUNG drivers who throw away their L Plates are being given a financial incentive to become better drivers in a new scheme launched in Cumbria this week.

Vouchers worth £60 are being given to those aged between 17 and 20 who have passed their test in the previous 12 months to undertake Pass Plus sessions involving qualified local driving instructors.

Participants will also have to undertake a Road Awareness Training session presented by the Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service.

And the first 100 applicants will receive their course free-of-charge.

"Last year the three-year age group between 17 and 20 represented almost 25 per cent of all fatalities in Cumbria," said Coun Ian Stewart, Cumbria County Council cabinet member with responsibility for road safety.

"This carnage involving young drivers, their passengers and other road users cannot be allowed to continue. We are providing the opportunity for young drivers to enhance their driving skills and awareness of hazards on the roads.

"The added benefit is that some insurance companies provide discounts to young drivers who attain Pass Plus."

Pass Plus comprises modules that give young drivers experience of motorway, town and rural driving, as well as driving at night and in adverse weather conditions which are not covered in the standard driving test.

Coun Stewart pointed out that the £60 voucher plan was created by Safer Roads for Cumbria which had approached local companies and bodies for financial support.

"We have had a fabulous response to this scheme which shows the depth of commitment there is in Cumbria to help young people to not only become safer, better drivers but possibly save their own lives and the lives of others," said Coun Stewart.
