A good show of cattle were presented to a ring side of buyers from all parts of the UK which ensured a trade well above vendors expectations. Messrs Towers, Colt Park Farm run of outstanding heifers and calves averaged £2270 and topped at £2900 for a British Blue x heifer with Limousin bull calf. Messrs McAlister, Wester Thomaston heifers and calves average £2435 and topped at £2850 for a British Blue x heifer with Limousin bull calf. Messrs Dickinson, High Knipe run of outstanding heifers and calves average £2226 and topped at £2800 for a Limousin x heifer and Limousin bull calf at foot. Messrs Elliot, Bank House run of heifers and calves topped at £2600 for at British Blue x heifer with Limousin x heifer calf to go on and average £2316. First Milking Doorman Tops January Trade The first Border & Lakeland Show and Sale of 2016 had a quality offering of freshly calved cows and heifers consigned by many of the leading herds from the North of England and Scotland. The sale attracted a large crowd of buyers from sixteen counties from Stirling to Shropshire with 43 different buyers taking part. Trade topped at 2,900gns to average £1379 for a 100% clearance.
The event was sponsored by Paragon Veterinary Group and Cogent, and judged impeccably by Alistair Marshall from Hargrove Farms, Dumfries. P & CA Harrison, Breckney Hill Farm consigned four amazing heifers with super pedigrees placing 1st, 2nd & 4th in the Senior heifer class and 2nd in the Junior class. The winning Senior heifer was the Overall Champion, Chishillways Mark Frieda who was bred from five generations of Excellent or Very Good cows and sired by Carhall Mark. She sold for 2,400gns to T Forsyth, Isle Farm.
The Reserve Champion was the 2nd prize Senior heifer Chishillways Goldfish Shirley 72 sired by Toc-Farm Goldfish and bred from four generations of Excellent or Very Goods all with massive production. She sold for 2,100gns to Messrs Lawrie, Grangehall Farm, Pettinain, Lanark.
The Harrison family averaged £2165 for their four cracking heifers with Chishillways Goldfish Shirley 73 selling for 2,300gns to T Forsyth, Isle Farm. She was sired by Toc-Farm Goldfish and will complete the sixth generation of cows to classify in the top grades.
The first milking daughter of Val-Bisson Doorman to sell in the UK was consigned by WM Hutchinson & Son Redgate, Kirby Stephen. Bowberhill Doorman Papoose was bred from sixteen generations of Excellent or Very Good cows from an amazing line of the Papoose cow family. She was the highest index heifer in the sale with a PLI+£230, she calved at 23 months and will show at UK Dairy Expo in the Milking Yearling class. She sold for 2,900gns to Messrs Lawrie, Grangehall Farm, Pettinain, Lanark.
The next sale at Borderway takes place on 3rd February and features 150 head comprising of freshly calved cows and heifers, in-calf heifers, bulling heifers and heifer calves.

STORE CATTLE & WEANLINGS
Harrison & Hetherington had forward 895 cattle at their Weekly Wednesday Sale, comprising of 505 Store Cattle, Store Bulls and Stirks, 280 Calves and 110 Dairy Cattle including an entry of 104 in the Monthly Border & Lakeland Holstein Club Sale.
With 147 active buyers operating all 3 rings experienced a sharper trade, especially quality sorts, and many more could have been sold.
STORE CATTLE – A good number of 220 store cattle forward at Borderways Weekly sale, quality not forward compared to the previous week but despite this the trade was dearer.
Top overall was a superb Limousin cross steer from Messrs Athey, High Lovelady Shield, Alston achieving £1260. Messrs Beaty, Durdar Farm, Carlisle sold top British Blue cross which achieved £1200. Heifers were seen to top at £1140 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Weal, Birkshawhead, Lockerbie. British Blue crosses peaked at £1135 from Messrs White, Sandford Hall, Appleby, finally black and whites sold to £845 for Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth.

Harrison & Hetherington Limited held their weekly sale of calves. A smaller show of 278 were forward with continental calves sharper on the week especially the younger calves. Top price was £500 for a strong Limousin bull calf from Messrs Carlyle, Slealands Burn, Longtown. Native calves continue to be harder to cash particularly younger heifers. Top price in the black and white section was £165 for a fantastic British Friesian from Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank, Penrith.

Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A larger show of 504 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward.
CAST COWS, BULLS & OTM CATTLE: A larger and better quality show of 357 cast cows and stock bulls were presented to a large ring side of buyers. Messrs Walton & Sons of Greyside Farm, Hexham run of cows topped at 199.5ppk for a British Blue cross cow purchased by Mr Les Fell. Messrs Johnson of West Wharmley, Hexham run of cows topped at 185.5ppk for a Limousin cross purchased by Mr Shaun McGimpsey. Messrs Hall of Ainstable Hall run of outstanding cows topped at 177.5ppk for a British Blue cross purchased by Cleveland Meats. Mr Keith Harryman of Keskadale, cows topped at 897kg, 160.5ppk or £1439 for a Charolais cross cow purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Lawson of Hundith House sows topped at 797kg, 176.5ppk or £1406 for a Limousin also purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Thompson of Townfoot run of Limousin cows topped at 175.5ppk and was purchased by Mr Shaun McGimpsey.
Good black and white cows were slightly less on the week, but plainer cows were every bit as dear to last week’s flying trade. Messrs Robinson of Burtholme Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow, which sold to 132.5ppk and was purchased by Mr Shaun McGimpsey. Messrs Smithson of Skelcies Hall Holstein cross cows topped at 122.5ppk and was purchased by Mr Andrew Hawley. How End Farms run of Holstein cross cows topped at 840kg, 109.5ppk or £919 and was purchased by Woolley Bros. Messrs Little & Son of Kirkbride House Holstein cross cows topped at 795kg, 111.5ppk or £886 purchased by Mr Shaun McGimpsey and to 786kg 112.5ppk or £884 purchased by Dawn Meats. Messrs Jackson & Son of Lingstubbs Farm run of Holsteins topped at 909kg, 97.5ppk or £886 to Dawn Meats. Messrs Johnson of West Wharmley sold the top overall priced Charolais stock bull, which sold to 1082kg, 155.5ppk or £1682 and was purchased by Mr Les Fell. PRIME BULLS- A much larger show of 108 prime bulls were forward with trade slightly easier on the week. Top price of the day was a Limousin from Messrs Ackerley of Milton Mains achieving £1547.32. Messrs Goldie of Newbie Mains sold the second top price of the day to £1538.32 for a Simmental, and Messrs Teasdale of Halefield Farm, Penrith sold a British Blue to £1506.86. Black and whites achieved a top of £971.09 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Nicholson & Son of Moorhouse, Carlisle.
Topping the overall pence per kilo was 220.5ppk which was achieved by Messrs Hall of Ainstable Hall, Carlisle with a marvellous British Blue. Messrs Harryman of Keskadale Farm, Keswick sold top priced Limousin to 218.5ppk and finally, black and whites sold to a top of 162.5ppk for a British Friesian, consigned by Messrs Dickinson of High House, Wigton.

Messrs Hewtson of Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth sold top Charolais steer to £1466.25 and was purchased by Mr Les Fell. Top heifer was consigned by Messrs Jenkinson of Clifton Moor, Penrith selling a Limousin to £1401.51 again purchased by Mr Fell.
Top overall pence per kilo was from Messrs Dickinson of North Netherscales, Penrith achieving 217.5ppk and was purchased by Messrs Mulholland, The Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle. Top steer was 209.5ppk from Messrs Bowe of Bothel Parks, Wigton, for the aforementioned animal.

A highlight of the sale was a fabulous run of 165 Blackface hoggs brought forward by Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, Longtown which sold to a top of £80, 190.5p to average 187.41ppk.

STORE & BREEDING SHEEP
Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of store sheep.
STORE SHEEP – A smaller show of store sheep were forward, however seeing trade up on the week. The sale topper was consigned by Messrs Reay & Sons of West Moorhouses, Newcastle, securing the top price of £70 per head for Texel lambs. Swaledale lambs were also high in demand, seeing a tremendous pen of 10, gaining £47 from Messrs Ridley of Wood Hall, Wigton.

BREEDING SHEEP- Following the sale of store sheep was a small selection of in-lamb breeding ewes, but due to the recent weather, demand was low.
