THE 1944 battle for Monte Cassino is being commemorated by an army re-enactment group on Helvellyn.
Gurkha riflemen, who captured a position called Hangman's Hill, will be honoured when North East hobby militia make it to the 950 metre Lake District summit carrying two wooden period ammunition boxes each.
India Eagles - the 4th Indian Division's re-enactment group - are planning the ascent on July 21 to raise funds for the Gurkha Welfare Trust.
"We decided to mark the momentous battle, when Hangman's Hill was held for 16 days by just a few men, and support the Gurkhas into the bargain," explained one of the organisers Steve Driver.
Wearing Word War II uniforms, around 10 soldiers' and a similar number of supporters will be taking part.
