THE South Lakes Safari Zoo is going 'to close its doors to the public', according to a statement issued on the company's Facebook page.

It is not yet clear whether the site, in Dalton-in-Furness, will close permanently or temporarily, but the message reads: "Safari Zoo is to close its doors to the public from January 9, 2016.

"Due to decisions made by Barrow Borough Council today and in the past year the management have been forced by councillors and officers into a situation where they decided to close the Zoo.

"It is a difficult decision to make but the Management of the Zoo have no alternatives available to continue.
