Kirkby Stephen Annual Christmas Prize Show and Sale of Store Cattle. Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen mart held their annual Christmas prize show and sale of store cattle on Monday.
Topping the sale at £1255 was the Champion steer which was judged by up and coming farmer young Thomas Birkbeck, Soulby. This 16 month old British Blue steer consigned by Messrs Tiplady, Littlebeck, Richmond and was bought by Messrs Webster, Ormskirk Trade for all types and ages of store cattle was tremendous and was said to have been much dearer than many recent sales. A strong ringside of buyers were present for all classes of cattle. Good quality heifers were particularly good to sell with this section averaging £964.69 for a predominantly younger show of cattle forward.

Kirkby Stephen Cast and OTM Cows
Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their fortnightly sale of cast & OTM cattle which included the annual Christmas prize show and sale, where 61 head were forward.
Topping the sale at £1391.25 (187.5p/kg) was a British Blue cross cow from Messrs Skidmore, Needless Hall Farm, Toronto, which was bought by Mr David Barker.
The pre sale show was ably judged by Mr Thomas Birkbeck, Soulby, who awarded the championship to a eight year old British Blue cross cow from Messrs White, Rigg Farm, Lunedale, which sold for £1365.30 selling to David Barker.
Kirkby Stephen bucked the national trend of trade being easier, with the best quality end of cows being every bit as dear as they have been.

Kirkby Stephen Weekly Sheep
Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of Prime Sheep on Tuesday night when an entry of 3,034 sheep were forward consisting of 2,450 prime lambs and 584 cast ewes and rams.
Topping the sale at £105.80 was a Beltex x lamb from Messrs Kendal, Outgang Farm, Helton which was bought by Steadman’s Butchers, Kirkby Stephen.
Topping at 229.10p/kg were a pen of Beltex x lambs from Messrs Dodd, West View, Temple Sowerby which were purchased by Vivers Scotlamb.
Mule lambs topped on two different occasions at £77.30. Firstly for a pen of 30 lambs from Messrs Rawsthorne, Scargill Farm, Carnforth with the same price being achieved for another pen of 25 lambs this time from Messrs Huck, Sowerthwaite Farm, Lancaster. Messrs Rawsthorne sold a run of 210 lambs to average £74.05
Good pens of mule lambs were very good to sell with the total entry of 747 mule lambs forward averaging an excellent £70.63
