FORMER landlords of a village pub decided to move to Cyprus to start a new life in the sun, but were so homesick for the landscape and people of Orton they have come back home.
And it was not just Michael Dolan and Robert Wilton who felt they were missing something. As villagers heard the news that the boys were back, they hung a banner over the hotel and are looking forward to a welcome home party this coming Friday (May 18).
Michael explained: "We had been on holiday to Cyprus and loved the climate and the place so much we decided to give up our lives in Orton, running The George Hotel, for sunshine and a new life 18 months ago.
"We opened a bar and restaurant in Aya Napa and though we enjoyed it there we began to feel homesick. We kept ringing home.
"A group came from the village on a surprise visit and there were many other friends from Orton who came out to Cyprus." When the management of The George became vacant again they jumped at the chance of returning.
Robert added: "We had worked at The George for three-and-a-half years and it was our home. The village is a very special place with a very strong sense of community. We missed the people and we are just delighted to be back home. It feels like we have never been away, and we have had such a warm welcome back."
Robert and Michael's homecoming will be celebrated on Friday as Liverpool-based Professor Longhair and Band perform at their open party. Described as The Commitments with attitude, the six-piece band is set to herald the return of entertainment events and celebrations at The George.
Michael explained: "When a 70-year old farmer comes in and says to you Great to see you. The ale's better and when's the quiz night back on?' you know you are doing something that the community wants.
"The live music nights, fun quiz nights and entertainment have proved popular with local people and we will be booking artists to entertain in the weeks to come.
"We have a reputation for celebrating in style at The George Hotel. No other bar is decorated in such style as ours for Halloween, Valentine's Day, Christmas or any other event."
Robert added: "We will be hosting the special Greek or Cyprus night, but our new menu, which will be available very soon, will be a celebration of local produce and the homemade pies will be back on.
"Everything we serve is freshly prepared from fresh, local ingredients whereever possible. Many of our regulars are the farmers who supply our kitchen, and are regulars at the farmers' market.
"We have kept in touch with our friends in Cyprus and it will be a pleasure to show them how very special Orton and the surrounding area is if they come to visit. The rovers have definitely returned home and it's great to be part of the vibrant community spirit here."
Chef Robert added: "Nothing is too much trouble for our customers."
