MOTORISTS may have noticed a number of green bins popping up by slip roads along the M6 network in Cumbria, but they're not for recycling!
They are in fact pollution control green bins and, as part of a new scheme, have been sited at strategic points along the M6 in Cumbria by the Cumbria Emergency Environmental Protection Liaison Group (CEEPLG).
Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service vehicles carry grab packs' that are used at the scene of road traffic incidents to contain pollutants and minimise the environmental impact on nearby watercourses.
This prompt action has prevented dozens of pollution incidents over the years and in some cases has meant the attendance of the Environment Agency has not been required.
The new green bins - installed by the Highways Agency - also contain pollution control equipment and their introduction at key locations means this essential equipment is now easily accessible to all emergency services dealing with road traffic incidents.
The Environment Agency's chairman, Sir John Harmanbe, visited Penrith to meet members of the CEEPLG and to officially announce the new scheme.
