FOOTBALL: Kirkby Stephen's Carvetii United Reserves joined in the club's amazing trophy success when a 4-1 victory over Lunesdale United Reserves gave them the Peter Daws Memorial Shield at Penrith FC last Friday.
The Shield is awarded to the winners of the Third Division Knockout competition in the Talbot Insurance Westmorland League.
Manager Tony Ostle, who was enjoyed his first cup win since taking charge of the Reserves, said: "I was delighted with the performance by the side, especially as they came back from going a goal behind.
"It was a horrible night at Penith and they showed a lot of character in a battling display.
"They're an excellent set of lads and we've enjoyed an excellent season."
Although Lunesdale opened the scoring, Carvetii managed to get back on level terms on the stroke of half time when Steve Holmes headed home a Danny Hastwell corner.
Holmes then put Carvetii 2-1 up when he converted a pinpoint cross from his strike partner Craig Ostle.
A third Carvetii goal arrived when good inter-passing finished with Scott Allinson squaring the ball for Hastell to tap in at the far post.
Carvetii were on top at this stage and Holmes completed a hat-trick with a fine solo goal, chipping the keeper from a tight angle.
Midfielders Carl Bell and David Law did a lot of good work in midfield for the winners, while James Coulthard ably marshalled his defence.
Carvetii's first team side, with the championship safely in the bag, toasted a cup and league double by beating Ambleside United 6-5 on penalties in the final of the Second Division's Mason and Freeman Cup final at Kendal last Tuesday.
Carvetii's John Boustead put them ahead, but Craig Edmondson cancelled out the goal for the game to finish 1-1 at the end of extra time.
The outcome was then decided in the first round of sudden-death spot-kicks after each side had netted five times.
