KENDAL student Tom Buckler, who is in his third year at Edinburgh University, has successfully applied for an English teaching assistant position in Kendal's twin town in Germany.
Leaving for Rinteln in June, Tom will initially be practising his German language skills with a summer vacation job at the Hotel Wetmueller. It is hoped that he will be assigned to the Ernestinum grammar school for the 2007-8 academic year as part of his language degree course at Edinburgh. The headmaster of the school interviewed Tom during a recent visit to Rinteln and has written to the Hanover district authorities requesting that he is assigned to his school, with the added backing of the Mayor of Rinteln, a keen advocate of the links with Kendal. Tom is the son of Dr Philip and Dr Jennifer Buckler, of Kendal.
A delegation from Rinteln will be attending this year's Kendal mayor making tomorrow (Thursday).
