CUMBRIA's politicians have been quick to comment on Tony Blair's long-awaited announcement that he is to stand down as Prime Minister, with the three main parties greeting the news with optimism.

After months of speculation, the PM went public on plans to relinquish his power yesterday (Thursday), prompting Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron to call for a general election.

Without the Queen's nod to dissolve parliament, a new prime minister could be chosen within seven weeks, although Mr Blair's neighbour, the Chancellor Gordon Brown, is the clear favourite to move into Number 10.
