A VET''S visit to Kathmandu to carry out vital voluntary work with stray dogs has inspired her to do more for animals in deprived areas, reports Daniel Orr.
Mhairi Cameron, 28, of Ulverston, spent three weeks in the capital city of Nepal at the Kathmandu Animal Treatment (KAT) Centre, helping with an ongoing mission to help more than 30,000 canines living in a perilous state on the streets, many of which suffer with malnutrition and disease.
Staff members hope to create a rabies-free, non-breeding street dog population through neutering and vaccination, as well as treatment of the disease. At least 200 people die from rabies every year.
Miss Cameron, who works at the South Lakes Vet Centre, Ulverston, spent three weeks in Kathmandu, where each working day began at 6am with dog catching before operating on as many as seven dogs.
Now Miss Cameron is trying to raise funds for the KAT centre and is organising a ceilidh at Hawkshead Brewery, Staveley. If you would like toi help, contact her at mhairicameronvet@yahoo.com.sg .
