SOUTH Lakeland District Council has said that re-opening Grange’s historic lido as a pool is ‘not sustainable’.
The authority said it is working to establish a clear direction for the former outdoor pool, and recognises the need to resolve its derelict state.
A spokesperson said: “A pool option for the site is not a sustainable proposition and we now need to investigate options that are compatible with the Grade II listing of the site that will present a sustainable, long-term, proposition.

“This may be to consolidate buildings and structure, yet with public open space within it.
“We will also explore the idea of involving other parties who could take a substantial role in addressing the site’s dereliction and future management.
“Study work will continue drawing together and adding to the existing work undertaken on the lido’s restoration and examining other options compatible with the site’s listing.”
The lido, which is located on Grange’s Edwardian promenade, enjoyed its heyday in the 1930s but was closed in 1993.
A consultation was held in 2013 where residents voted to have the structure reopened as an outdoor swimming pool.
