A TEENAGER suffered serious injuries after she was hit by falling rocks on Great Langdale.
The 17-year-old, who is from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, suffered an open fracture to her skull while climbing with friends on Middle Fell Buttress.
She was rescued by members of the Langdale Mountain Rescue Team, who made her comfortable, before she was airlifted to Furness General Hospital in Barrow.
Team leader Nick Owen said members of the rescue team were called out at around 8.00pm on Saturday (May 5) night.
"They (the group of friends) arrived at the campsite late afternoon and went for an explore. They were not experienced climbers or walkers.
"They went up Middle Fell, which is steep and very loose, and they got about half way up before they were hit by falling rocks.
"No one else was injured and the girl has since been transferred from Barrow to the Royal Preston Hospital for neurosurgery," he said.
