IT was awards galore for Kirkbie Kendal school as they scooped two prestigious prizes at a glittering awards ceremony.
The school won the Best Teacher category and produced a finalist in the Best Student Design Process category at the PrintIT Awards - hosted by ProSkills, a company dedicated to developing practical skills in the print industry.
Leicester College hosted the ceremony on Wednesday, July 1, and it was attended by pupils from across the country.
Pupils were challenged to get involved with the sustainable design process by submitting work outlining how they would create a particular product.
'Teacher of the Year' Louise Barron said: "The PrintIT! Awards Ceremony 2015 was a great experience for both myself and my student finalist. It was interesting to see the design process, print and finishing facilities at Leicester College during the tours – It made the PrintIT! competition, with its links to industry apprenticeships, extremely real and relevant for our design students. As part of the design process our students at Kirkbie Kendal School visited a local manufacturer of paper, James Cropper PLC, who make the red paper for the Remembrance Day poppies each year.
"It's been great to establish links within our local community, and hopefully these will now continue. It has given our students a great insight into the Print, Paper and Packaging Industries within the UK."
The Best Design Process finalist was Sarah Grove, also of Kirkbie Kendal School.
Sarah submitted a graphic design folder with designs ideas for a Fairtrade product, resulting in a mobile phone cover design and won a FujiFilm camera for her efforts.
She said: "I enjoyed making and evaluating my product for PrintIT! It was awesome to learn about the different industries of print and Paper”.
Phil Hyman, Headteacher at the school, added: "I am very proud of the achievements of both Sarah and Ms Baron. Sarah is an excellent student and it is very typical of Ms Baron's modest approach that she told me about Sarah's award and not her's."
