Friend Ship lands CHILDREN from a Windermere school got a lesson in environmentally-friendly efficiency from an extra terrestrial as part of an eco-friendly education project.

The United Utilities Friend Ship touched down at Windermere CE Primary School as part of a regional tour of schools to help children learn about caring for the environment and their local community.

The project was centred on the spaceship Guzzle which has been using up too many natural resources and damaging the environment.

Through this, the children learned about issues such as the environment and sustainability through a combination of drama, puppetry, film and music.

Head teacher Martin Thwaites said: "The visit of the Environmental Friendship Project was a wonderful opportunity for all our children to learn that we all have an impact on the world through our actions.

"In this way we can help to make informed choices that can make a difference to the environment, locally and globally. It is an experience that I'm sure will live long in the minds of the children."

The project is being run as part of the celebrations in the run up to Liverpool European Capital of Culture 2008 and more than 20,000 children from 50 primary schools across the North West are taking part in the programme.
