THE Deputy Prime Minister visited Kendal to offer his support to Lib Dem candidate Tim Farron and predicted that his party will get more seats than pollsters expect.
Nick Clegg saw bread making first hand at the Lovingly Artisan site on Crook Road, but there was nothing half baked about his message - "We'll do a lot better than people think".
However, on the eve of the closest General Election in recent history, Mr Clegg stopped short of putting a precise figure on the number of seats he thought his party would win.
Mr Clegg visited Westmorland and Lonsdale as part of a 1,000 mile trip from Land's End to John o' Groats.
When asked if he was standing next to his successor, Tim Farron, Mr Clegg said: "We'll take one parliament at a time. I'm sure we're going to do much better than all the parties expect.
"Tim is a dear friend and colleague, one of the most outstanding campaigners in British politics and we worked incredibly well together and intend to keep on doing that."

Westmorland and Lonsdale is one of the few remaining safe Lib Dem seats, when asked why that was, the Deputy Prime Minister said: "Because of Tim.
"The main challenge to Tim is a Conservative candidate. They want to smash funding for schools, nurseries and colleges. They have a very unfair plan to balanace the books by making the working age poor pick up the tab for the bankers.
"We want to put money back into schools and hospitals, give tax cuts to ordinary workers and protect the environment. That's a much more positive view for stronger economy and fairer society than the Conservatives."
Tim Farron, former President of the Liberal Democrats, said: "It's a massive honour to have Nick here. It gives us the chance to ram home our message that these are uncertain times and we don't want the country dragged off left or right or put in the hands of some extremist minor party.
"We want the Lib Dems at heart of government with moderate values and decency."
