A PRIEST who has become well-known for his high profile media contributions is retiring and leaving Kendal.

The Rev Dr Alan Billings is to leave St George's Church, and St John's, Grayrigg, at the end of October, after 13 years.

He has established a national and international profile, with broadcasts on BBC Radio 4's Thought For The Day, and has also been in the spotlight for some controversial views, including support for the war in Iraq.

He was also a stalwart friend when former Home Secretary David Blunkett found himself in political hot water over his friendship with Kimberly Quinn.

Dr Billings, 64, who is also a canon, said he had stayed in Kendal for a relatively long period partly because of the people.
