TENNIS: Kirkby Stephen Grammar School Sports College's boys community tennis first team pulled off a tremendous win last Saturday over Scarborough College, one of the strongest outfits in the North of England.

Scarborough last year reached the Northern final of the British Schools Championships when they were narrowly beaten by Glasgow High School.

In all, 14 matches were played inside the air dome at KSGS, with Kirkby running out winners by ten rubbers to four.

Kirkby's team, made up of KSGS students Andrew and Dan Todd, Jamie McAllister, Dan Stringer, Steffan Lewis and Innis Linn, along with Queen Elizabeth Grammar School student Mat Wigham, got off to a good start in the doubles round where they ran out 2-1 winners from the three matches but things were to get even better for Kirkby when they took the next six singles matches to go into a commanding 8-1 lead over their illustrious opponents.

There were some excellent wins along the way for all Kirkby's lads, including Andrew Todd's tight 7-6, 6-3 win over a player ranked significantly higher in the national ratings, and his brother Dan's excellent 6-7, 6-2, 10-8 victory, when he came back well from losing the first set.

Elsewhere, Jamie McAllister, Dan Stringer, Innis Linn, Steffan Lewis and Mat Wigham all scored convincing wins without dropping sets to make the final score 10-4 in Kirkby's favour.

All the boys are part of KSGS Sports College's Community Tennis Pro-gramme, which runs sessions on five days every week at KSGS and caters for around 80 junior players from the age of four upwards. For programme details, contact Gary Payton (pictured) on 07890-615926.
