FOOTBALL: Some 350 girls took part in the fourth annual Sports College Cup at Frenchfields, Penrith, last Wednesday.
Twenty-three schools from all over Cumbria entered 33 teams in four age groups for the right to become Sports College Cup champions for 2007 at the event, which was organised by St Aidan's County High School and supported by the both Cumberland and Westmorland County FAs.
The popularity of the competition continues to grow and a number of new entrants featured in the primary school competition, with teams from Wigton and Barrow also lining up this year. But an all-Carlisle final resulted as reigning champions Inglewood once again came out on top, beating Robert Ferguson 2-0.
It was also competitive in the Under-13 competition, with both semi-finals closely matched before St Aidan's defeated Ullswater and Trinity beat Queen Elizabeth, Kirkby Lonsdale. St Aidan's triumphed in the final to take the U13 title for the second year running.
Meanwhile, Cockermouth School came out on top in the Under-18 competition with Carlisle College runners-up on their debut.
The day would not have been such a success without the help of St Aidan's sports leaders, who acted as match referees, collated results and did a lot of behind-the-scenes work.
The Sports College Cup was part of Cancer Research UK fund-raising events that St Aidan's is currently undertaking. All of the winning teams received medals and footballs for their schools.
At next year's event, more girls will have the opportunity to take part when another age group is added to the programme.
