Cumbrians are being asked to vote for their favourite woodland in the county in a popularity poll by the Friends of the Lake District.

The county's woodlands are a special feature of the landscape, with some of national importance such as those in Borrowdale and the Duddon Valley for nature conservation.

People can vote online by visiting www.fld.org.uk by selecting their favourite woodland from a list of eight of the county's best-known woodlands.

The winning woodland will be announced at the end of March.

Friends of the Lake District policy officer Jack Ellerby said: "This poll is all about local people celebrating the county's landscape.

"Cumbria has lots of great woodlands which we know people enjoy. This is a bit of fun for people to take part in and share some of their passion for the countryside."

The online vote is part of the Friends of the Lake District's year of campaigning on the theme of Cumbria - It's Your Landscape, which aims to encourage Cumbrians to enjoy and celebrate the special qualities of the county's landscape. Woodlands are a key focus for the FLD and work includes: l. Giving grants towards woodland restoration at Murthwaite Wood, near Gosforth, and Great Knott Wood, Lakeside, as well as wood pasture restoration at Geltsdale, North Pennines.

2. Working with the Forestry Commission to help fund the removal of conifers in the Duddon Valley, restoring the area to native woodland.

3. Supporting the Forestry Commission in plans to enhance Whinlatter Forest.

4. Supporting United Utilities with the restoration of native woodland around Thirlmere.
