APPLEBY'S problematic public toilets are to be reopened to ease the strain on the town's conveniences during the busiest period of its social calendar.
Eden District Council has agreed to provide funds to Appleby Town Council to enable it to reopen the public toilets at the Shire Hall for the duration of the Appleby Fair in June.
The toilets at the Shire Hall have been closed since October last year after EDC, which maintains the toilets, received a number of complaints about the state of the conveniences, including a letter from the town council that deemed them to be "unfit for public use."
Members of EDC's environment committee had originally discussed the possibility of providing six temporary Portaloos in the car park adjacent to the Shire Hall but resolved instead to provide the £1,920 it would have spent on the scheme to Appleby Town Council to enable them to reopen the toilets for the duration of the fair.
EDC is currently in contract negotiations with Cumbria County Council, which owns the Shire Hall, in an attempt to secure the long-term public tenure of the toilets before it can address the cost of refurbishing the amenities.
