A distinguished naval admiral is joining the board of the Lake District National Park Authority after being appointed by the Secretary of State.
Admiral Sir John Kerr, from Kirkby Lonsdale, will step into the shoes of Eden member Duncan Jeffray, who is leaving the authority after six years.
Mr Jeffray, who is also bidding farewell to his Newbiggin-on-Lune home to live on the boundary of the Exmoor National Park, has played a crucial role in planning and policy-making at the park since joining in 2001.
After attending his final meeting on Wednesday, during which LDNPA chairman David Thornton described him as "an ideal member", Mr Jeffray planted a tree in the grounds of the LDNPA's Kendal headquarters.
His Manchester-born replacement, whose high-flying naval career culminated in him becoming Commander-in-Chief Naval Home Command, will be working with a smaller team at the LDNPA, which is reducing membership from 26 to 22, from May.
