A MAN from Furness died and several others were injured after a car carrying a family of six was involved in a collision on the M6.

The four-vehicle crash occurred on the southbound carriageway of the motorway between junctions 40 and 39 at a location known as Winter Tarn, at around 5.30pm on Monday.

Cumbria police said that an HGV, which was travelling in lane one, was involved in a collision with a recovery truck. A police spokesman added that the truck swerved and was in collision with a Mitsubishi Shogun, which was carrying a family of six from Barrow, and a Ford Fiesta.

Emergency services including Cumbria Ambulance Service, fire crews and police attended the crash site.

A male member of the family that was travelling in the Mitsubishi was pronounced dead at the scene, two other members of the family were critically injured, and one was seriously injured.

The M6 was closed for eight hours following the incident and re-opened in the early hours of Tuesday.
