THE driver of the Virgin train that derailed at Grayrigg was "glad to be home" after being released from his hospital bed for the first time since the fatal accident on February 23.
Driver Iain Black (pictured left) was hailed a hero by emergency workers and Virgin boss Richard Branson for staying at the controls of the stricken Pendolino train. Well-wishers have been by his Royal Preston Hospital bedside since the accident a month ago when he sustained neck and shoulder injuries. Kendal firefighters were invited to visit Mr Black, 46, from Dumbarton, so he could thank them for pulling him from the wreckage in a farmer's field, near Kendal.
Spokesman for Virgin Trains Allan McLean said Mr Black was discharged from hospital on Tuesday night.
