FOR many people, hubcaps exist merely to protect and brighten up the wheels of a car, writes Daniel Orr.
But for Maurice Rawlinson, of Ulverston, what began as a collection of spares for his own car has become an unusual garden feature.
His set has grown and grown until the point where he now owns more than 240 - and counting.
There are few makes and models not catered for on Mr Rawlinson's fence, with dedicated areas for Fords, Volskwagens, and even caravans.
Mr Rawlinson said: "It's just a bit of fun really. It's become a hobby and it's something different isn't it?
"It all started when I got a new Vauxhall Zafira and as I was travelling along I saw a wheel trim on the side of the road for a Vauxhall, and I thought I'll have that in case I lose one'.
"One led to two, and two led to 247. My favourite is the Mercedes one I have. The best ever collection day was when I got five in one day.
"Everybody has said to me what a smashing idea,' and most of the neighbours like them."
Mr Rawlinson, 57, a former truck driver, who retired 13 years ago owing to ill health, said friends and family were always on the look out for wheel trims to bring back for him.
