HARD-hitting police measures to tackle burglary, vehicle crime and criminal damage in South Lakeland have been launched as officers prepare themselves for a busy crime-fighting period, reports James Williamson.
Operation Acorn, a three-month blitz against petty crime, began this week after police claimed that the spring months resulted in an increase in such incidents every year.
The scheme aims to reduce petty crime in the area by up to 20 per cent by making arrests and increasing detection rates.
To do this, officers will undertake high visibility patrols, target known offenders and the handlers of stolen property, and provide crime prevention advice and support to residents in areas that are affected.
Neighbourhood Watch, Farmwatch and Pentalk networks will help officers gather intelligence and provide reassurance to communities.
Crime prevention officer Terry Belshaw said the scheme would run from now until June 4.
