THE driver of the derailed Virgin Train, who used to be a policeman in Cumbria, has been hailed a hero by the company's boss Sir Richard Branson.

Speaking from the scene, at Grayrigg, near Kendal, Sir Richard said it was a "miracle" that there were not more casualties and fatalities.

He praised the actions of driver Ian Black saying the casualty list could have been much greater had it not been for his bravery.

"The driver Ian Black came around a corner and the line was defective," said Sir Richard.

"The train went off the line and he carried on sitting in the carriage for nearly half-a-mile running the train along the stone.

"He could have tried to get back and protect himself but he didn't and he's ended up badly injured."

At lunchtime a mountain rescue team was sent out to look for anyone who may have wandered off in the dark after last night's derailment of the 17:15 London to Glasgow service.
