LOCAL government structure and housing problems are the main political priorities for the coming year according to Kendal's new mayor.
Coun Gwen Murfin, who represents the town's Mintsfeet ward, will don the gold mayoral chain on Thursday, May 17, after town councillors elected her to succeed Coun Gwyneth Raymond.
The former deputy mayor, who has been a Kendal Town and South Lakeland District Councillor for five years, said she was thrilled and delighted' to accept the post, insisting that there are exciting times ahead'.
"I will be looking in great depth at the Government's white paper proposals and I think that it is a great opportunity for communities to get involved with local politics," she said.
Away from her political duties, Coun Murfin likes nothing better than getting her hands dirty in the garden and listening to music from her favourite artists such as Bob Marley and Enigma.
She is also a keen environmentalist and keeps abreast of green issues by reading books, watching documentaries and listening to the news.
Coun Claire Feeney-Johnson will replace Coun Murfin as the town's deputy mayor.
