FOOTBALL: A Lee Collins goal for Keswick four minutes from the end of extra time sealed Appleby's fate as they lost 1-0 in the quarter-finals of the Westmorland FA Benevolent Trophy on Saturday.

One goal always looked like deciding the issue, but the teams were mentally preparing for a penalty shootout when Keswick counter-attacked down the right and Collins's stooping header converted a rare cross into the danger area.

Second Division promotion-seekers Carvetii United matched Kendal County up to half time in another quarter-final as they twice came back to cut the gap to 3-2 at half time.

Carvetii lost their keeper with a back injury before the break and after that the home team pulled away for a comfortable win after striking twice from setpiece free kicks on the edge of the box.

Lunesdale United striker Chris Ellwood hit a memorable four-timer and Johnny Lowis bagged the other as they won 5-2 at Kendal Town Reserves in the league.
