Supporters of Kendal's Westmorland General Hospital were told this week they should be "encouraged" as health bosses were looking again at unpopular plans to cut services.
The message was given at a packed meeting on Wednesday when around 250 people turned out to talk about the future of the NHS in Cumbria.
The proposals to close the hospital to urgent medical patients, such as those with heart attacks and strokes, were what many people wanted to talk about, as part of what health bosses have dubbed The Great Debate.
